If the former, it's a strong 64 with a good shot at 65 depending on how the grader feels about the single scratch near the mouth. Report this Post to the Staff

Outside of the two scratches on the obverse, not much else. MS-64 maybe higher depending upon scratches and luster. Report this Post to the Staff
Bryan1315 Bedrock of the Community United States 14454 Posts	Posted 09/28/2009 10:38 am I don't think I would go as jigh as 65 but I think it may grade 63 or 64 (my first impression was 63). 79-S is one of the best struck Morgans along with 81-s and a few others and finding them in 67 and above isn't really that hard Report this Post to the Staff

Ok I have to edit this because I just can't tell what variety it is. 1st 2nd or third. my untrained eye is really untrained I guess. lol I thought it might be 2nd reverse, but I am not sure. Jaobler Pillar of the Community United States 6396 Posts	Posted 09/29/2009 11:47 am I believe it is the "3rd Reverse" which is determined by the top arrow feather edge being slanted. In the 2nd reverse that edge is parallel to the other feather edges. The 3rd reverse type is more common than the 2nd. The Red Book does not list a 1st reverse type for the 1879-S, which would have the concave breast design seen on the 1878 8-tailfeathers coins. Does anyone know whether that version exists?
