Hi and Happy Mothers Day to all the moms and grandmas here!! I have these two Peace dollars, and wish they were prettier, but wonder what in the world makes them look almost rusty in places. The first one has a bunch of "chicken tracks" on her face (for lack of a better description). The 28 has a real silvery luster, front and back, except where the dark color shows through. The 1928s isn't as bad, but still has some of that rusty color on the front. These were both stored in small manilla envelopes for many years. I see one on ebay now, auction # 8419640849 with the same "rusty" color, still graded an MS65 by SEGS. Of course no chicken tracks!! Does that color not matter? Any of your thoughts on these two coins would be appreciated. Sorry about all the pics, but I wanted you to see them good. Hi Alice, you must have made it back ok.  Your first coin I would grade somewhere in the EF-40 range, the hair over the brow and ear looks strong. it looks like the outside edge of the right wing on the reverse has a some wear. I see a lot of fine scratches like maybe someone might have tried to clean it at some time. Just a guess. The coin has so much going on,tough one for me. Terry Edited by TLS5933

OH Yes, Great flight, wonderful sunny day on the boardwalk, my mom and aunt had a wonderful time, and I came home with some $$. Not a lot, but a little more than I took. Yeaaaaa!!! Nice moms day break for the three of us. Thanks for looking at these. They look like the saddest coins of uncles lot, and I was really curious about the rusty looking areas. I see that other Peace dollars have the same problem too. Didn't know if they were "dipped" (guess that means in silver) or just what happened to them. Wow, I think these coins are fakes. It looks like the silver coating is coming off, and the dark rusty stuff underneath is base metal. Throw them on a scale, they should be about 26.73 grams. The 1928 is the key date in the Peace series, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they were fakes. I hope I'm wrong.....

If it isn't a fake, my best guess is that this coin was cleaned with either an acidic cleaner or silver polish and scrubbed. The fine lines would be from the scrubbing action. The dark spots could be from cleaner or polish left on the coin and not washed off. Some of these products have corrosive properties and will damage the metal if left on for long periods of time.

I don't think its a fake.It looks like the dark material is built up on and not into the coin. There are a few deep scratches into the coin where there is no discolorization. I guess Alice could clear that up if she said the dark areas are built up on or into the coin.

The scale I own is not that accurate in grms. unfortunately. They both weigh the same as the other Peace dollars I have here. You're right Terry, the dark colored area is built up not down into the coin. These were both in small manilla holders. Maybe the sulfer in the paper caused the discoloration. Again not sure. I really appreciate all the comments. Thanks Becky and Bio. They were put away in the 50's that's the only thing I am sure of at this point. |

Peace dollars tend to tone in a much for lack of a better word uglier way than Morgans,, EF-40 on the first coin. The second coin we will need full obverse and Reverse pics of. The pinkish color could be the result of a chemical cleaning or some type of environmental condition. or both. Rick

Hi Rick, Oh boy are you right!! That's the word in a nutshell! UGLY!!!! These are the ugliest coins in Uncle Jims collection!! LOL Thanks for looking at these. The 1928 full obverse and reverse are pics #1 and #6. The second coin, 1928s, full obverse and reverse are pics #10 and #15. Is that what you meant? Thanks, Alice

well I understand the opionions of them being fakes your photos are great quality in my opioion I am envious,, of course he had a great name "JIM"
but they might have been dipped and the tarnishing is coming back through but the base metal idea sounds good on at least the first one I do some cleaning marks

That is yucky toning[:p] But I'm happy to hear it is toning!!  Soak them in some hot soapy water, that should remove most of the toning, then maybe some acetone or hot clean water. At this point I wouldn't worry about any damage, someone already scrubbed them. |
