I picked up a Brilliant Uncirculated/Royal Mint set yesterday of Great Britain/Northern Ireland to commemorate the 25th year Reign of QEII. It's a pretty set. There was a 1970 set available also, but this one seemed to attract more of my attention. Anyone else have one of these? Was there a 50 year set minted? It would be a nice set to complete - I think!
Oops, sorry folks...I should have put this in the U.K. forum.

Thanks Rick! I hadn't had my full cup of java before I started jet-jawing on the forum this morning (obviously.
I atleast found something close to Irish! We're from County Cork and Claire which is Southern (just for those that don't know), but the Northern/GB will have to do for now.

The British 1970 and 1977 sets are actually proof sets; ordinary "mint sets" weren't regularly issued until 1982.
Both Proof and Mint sets were issued in 2002 for the Queen's golden jubilee. But wait, there's more! The Mint Sets come in three diferent wrappers: normal, wedding and baby gift. The Proof set, from my interpretation of Krause, comes in four flavours: Executive, Deluxe, Standard and Gift.
CV for the standard sets are $50 for Proof, $25 for Unc Mint Set.
They don't make 'em as cheap as they used to...

Thanks Sap...I had it mixed up in my mind...I was thinking that they didn't make "Proofs" until 1982 so mine is a Proof. It looks like one, but it just says " Royal Mint" so I wasn't 100% sure. I'll look for the Queen's Golden Jubilee set so that I can complete the honors of her Reign. I'll look and see what set I can find and what "flavour". My dealer doesn't handle many Great Brit sets. They just aren't big sellers for him so his prices are very reasonable...instant value! Thank you for the info!

Dsking, the 1970 British Proof Set is actually a common one,but it is interesting,as these are the last British pre-decimal coins.I was given one with a broken case,so I split up the set & mounted the coins in 2x2 holders.
As to Irish Proof Sets, there was one issued in 1971.The key dates in Irish Decimal Proof Sets are the 1986 (which contains the scarce 1/2p.),the 1988 (which contains the Dublin Millennium 50p.),& the 2000 (which contains both the 'Stag' & Millennium 1 Pound coins).I collect Irish circulation coins as a sideline to my British Commonwealth collecting interest.
Aidan.

Oh thank you, thank you Aiden Work. I'll search for the 1971 Irish Proof FIRST!
I'm glad I chose the 1977 British Proof instead of the 1970 however, I think I'll go back for the 70 since it was the last of the pre-decimal coins. Good info...no GREAT info. Thanks again!

Ironically, the 1970 proof set was not struck until 1972. And another little known fact about those sets... the smallest denomination (½ penny) and the largest denomination (½ crown), which are both in the 1970 set, dated 1970, were legally withdrawn and demonitized in 1969.

dsking, Was in Ireland last month. Wish I would have had a list of what you wanted. Regarding English coins, have you ever seen the "Specimen Sets" The Royal Mint produces? They are beautiful, and among my favorite coin sets to collect.

My list for the Irish coins would be long - ANY! I love the Harps!
I've seen the specimen sets - yes. My dealer doesn't specialize in them but, he has them. Atleast, I think they're specimen sets - not sure! I'll ask today on my weekly visit and will do an on-line search as well.
Will our common ground and interests never cease? We're planning a long, extended visit to Ireland when our Arizona Adventure comes to an end (one way or the other) and I'll scarf whatever I can find in their coinage when I get there. In the meantime, I'm researching what they have and what I would like to have.
