It's not that this is a bad picture. It's that this picture has been altered to give an impression of a not so good picture. I would bet that there was more effort put into making this look like a bad picture then the amount of effort it would take to make a good picture from the start. Please give us an update when coin is in hand. |

I will have no issue validating if the MM area was tampered... I run all my coins under a 200x stereo-scope. I really do appreciate all the input and feedback, but again, sometimes the crappy photo coins I win turn out to be keepers... if not, they get returned. Only time will tell in this instance...

When I bought from this seller and decided to return I contacted them and they really pushed for a partial refund rather than a return/refund> They ended up giving me half my money back. I thought that was fair. As another buyer quoted in the feedback "as long as you don't bid over xf money you should be fine". Though I must warn all coins I received from them all had a recent apparent cleaning.

Maybe I'll gullible, but the coin does appear to be a true 1922 Plain - Die 3 minting. (I know only the die 2 is considered a true "no D" by many of the grading companies but work with me here.) My reasons: The L in Liberty is very far left, the D appears to be gone, and the reverse has the terrible filled wheat stalks and the left bottom of the O in ONE is filled and oblong-ed. These are all consistent with a Die 3 coin. Compare yours with this Die 3:

I'm no expert, mnosretp, but some elementary research based on the (rather small) images certainly looks good enough to push further into the authentication process. Like I said, even if the surfaces are altered, you didn't overpay for a genuine "no-D." |

Bear with me folks.. I haven't taken the time to learn how to "quote" properly yet.
MOE145... yes, the coin I will be authenticating is similar in many respects to the picture of the die #3 you posted... with the exception of the last digit in the date. The last 2 in the date on the coin I posted is more consistent with those found on die #2. Not to say they do not exist, but I have yet to encounter a die #1 or die #3 coin with a strong last digit.
When all is said and done, if it proves to be a die #2, I get a coin that has to be discounted if it was color treated/cleaned/whatever.... and if it proves to be anything but a die #2 coin, it gets returned and I'm only out the postage to get it there.

If you decide to keep the coin...just a hint:
On the one coin I bought from that person the artificial color was easy to remove with water, acetone and then xylene. However, you might not like what you see under all that nail polish or whatever he's putting on his coins.

Here's the coin in question. It's appearance really is not all that bad in terms of color. There is definitely a "D" mint mark. The white in the image is due to the picture being taken thru the mylar of the 2x2 holder. This baby's already packaged for the return trip. So my quest for a 1922 Plain continues.  |
