I'd have to say Collector. I have sold a lot of coins though. Sold off my nickel thru dollar sets to focus on the one's and two's which are my primary interest. Upgraded early Lincoln's and a few IHC's. Closing in on two sets (Circ and Proof) of Two Cent Pieces. It's fun having money to spend...........

I have sold some of my coins and I have listed a few and withdrew the sale within hours of listing them after changing my mind. It is funny you sell something for XXX dollars and I find myself spending XXX+++ the next day on more. Undecided COLLECTOR AND UP-GRADER

I am a collector. I never expect to make money form coin collecting. However, I did trade some of my unwanted coins for several high end coins.

Wow, I really expected to be blasted for selling even one coin. We are brothers of a kindred spirit. Jim

usually the only time I sell any coins in my collection is to fund other coins for my collection. usually the only ones I sell off is ones I have acquired while thinking I was interested in a certain series only to find out I didn't find it very interesting so I will sell those off sometimes when I need to fund a large purchase. I have bought certain sets thinking they would be profitable but ended up just giving them away to someone else instead of selling them. like the Coin and Chronicles set I bought two and gave one away to a member here as a gift, also the 20th anniversary ASE set, I bought 20 and gave most away for Christmas presents even though they were selling for 3 times what I paid for them. So I guess I usually do not sell just to make a profit even though I have had some holdings that had the potential to be profitable but those that were in that category I usually ended up giving away

One of the very best things about the U.S.A. is our entrepreneurial spirit. Starting your own business is the American Dream! A few of my collectible coins have gone up in value, but ultimately I would get the most profit if I sold my 25+ years worth of 'junk silver' that was hoarded obtained at face value. The only 'problem' with selling them, is that I think Silver is still worth holding onto for the long term! That said, I also have lots of coins that aren't particularly valuable, but I enjoy having them nonetheless. That's what make you a 'collector'. Anyone who sells a coin to get a better coin is also a 'collector'.

Man, I love SuperDave. He is a die-hard capitalist......unless they want his best coins. So, which is it? LOL

I'm a collector - the coins in my collection are not for sale, at any price. However, I'll happily swap my coin for yours, if you have a better one. I don't keep "duplicates", so they don't count as part of "my collection"; any I accidentally or incidentally acquire get sold, usually through my local coin club auction. I rarely make a "profit" selling these duplicates... and I don't care, because I'm not in it for the money. I'm usually happy that my fellow club members have scored some "bargains" and hopefully they will now enjoy the coins more than I did.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Combination. I sell to fund my habit/collection. I am working on a few series, Standing Liberty quarters all in F-VF, LMC's in AU & up, Jeffersons in AU & up, etc. I roll hunt to both hoard and sell. I sell off approximately 25% of the silver I find, which pays for my purchases. I like seeing that others keep a spreadsheet of sales/purchases - I do the same, as I try to only spend profits from finds to build my collection. I do pick up various singles and lots that I'd sell for profit as well, perfect example is a 33 coin lot of SLQs I bought that had two 1917 Type 1's in it in AG-G condition. I sold both for 5x what I paid. Love the diversity here - and it's what makes reading the posts so interesting.

I'm sorting through a box of Lincoln cents as I type this...searching for wheaties, WAMs, CAMs, Cuds, DDOs, DDRs, et al. Some of which will end up in my "collection"...some of which will be sold. While I'm doing this, I'm also tossing every unwanted pre-1982 cent into a separate pile...for future considerations. I guess you could describe me as being a little bit of both. Seems I'm in good company here eh?

I'm both. I love coins for what they are, but I also get a thrill out of buying low and selling high. It's a great hobby!

I'm not only a collector, but a hoarder! Very very rarely do I part with my hard-won finds. I can think of two occasions- and both times the coins went to some one who wanted them even more than I did.
