Here's a chance (for fun), to invest $1,000. If you had the cash given to you, what would you do? What type of coin/coins would you purchase that you feel would yield the greatest return years from now?

Affordable, certified Lincoln key dates. With the likeyhood of the U.S. cent being discontinued I think more people will take notice. The ones I mentioned will fit their comfort range.

I think it would have to be something in circulated grades, maybe pre 1954 Commens in Au. I'm not sure that this would yeild the most as an "investment" or not but I don't trust things as they are right right now. The "bull market" as they like to call it seems to me to be a *high grade* bull market MS67 MS68 etc. At least that seems to be where the biggest gains are. It's not necessary to know where the top is. If I believe that there is a top then I have to believe that every spike in high grade stuff brings high grade material closer to the top--more risk. And every spike also reduces the distance to the top--less reward. I don't much fancy risk/reward ratios that are inverting.

What about the new 24K Buffalo $50.00 Proof Gold coin? This is the 1st 24k gold coin the mint is puting out and if they continue, the 1st year may be worth a lot seeing it is limited to 50,000

I heard on the radio today that the 24 K Buffalo was recently unveiled, and it is a real beauty.
A good investment I would think.

Hmmm, $1000 to invest? I think I would probably buy Aussie coins. I never really think about coins as an investment. I probably SHOULD, but I buy what I like and hope for the best. Shasti, do you know if that 300,000 is for the proof or is that proof and unc combined. And if it's just for the proof, is there a limit on the unc? I'd like to have one just for the sake of owning a 24K US coin but the price is mighty steep......... Margaret (thinking my birthday is coming up and my husband never knows what to buy me )

Heres a thing from a article I read: The Mint will sell two versions of the coin:
ÑA bullion coin, designed for investors. Starting Monday, the Mint will sell the coin only to authorized buyers who will distribute the coins to a network of several thousand local dealers--coin shops, banks and other financial institutions.
The Mint will base its sales price for this coin on the market price of gold and a premium of about 3 percent; other markups in the distribution chain are expected to push the final sales price to about 5 percent to 7.5 percent above the market gold price.
ÑA proof coin, which is aimed at collectors. This coin has a finer finish and a higher quality strike. The Mint is setting the initial price at $875 per proof coin and will only produce 300,000 of them.
Collectors can buy the proof coins directly from the Mint starting on Thursday by going to the Mint's Web site--www.usmint.gov--or by calling 1-800-USA-Mint. The site will also have a listing of local dealers who will be selling the coins.
All the American Buffalo coins will be produced at the Mint's facility in West Point, N.Y. Officials plan a ceremony on Tuesday to put the actual coins on display for the first time.

300,000 is only Proofs, there's no limit on the UNC. It'll be like the bullion AE. I'm definitely going to buy the UNC, would love to have the PF but price is too high. What are the chances of the PF not being very popular due to the price and not may collectors would buy it. Eventually it ends up being rare as not many bought it!! I must be dreaming

if that were to happen it would become the next 1995-W Silver Eagle. I will have to buy one of the Proof coins just for the fact that I have no Gold coins in my collection at all. I wish they would make a 5 coin set and just put it in with the Gold eagle set that way I could have them all at once instead of having to buy the 4 coin set and then the buffalo seperately which will add up close to the 4 coin platinum eagle set

Thanks for the correction guys.....Proof Coin will have a mintage limit of up to 300,000 coins. I'm really thinking of trying to get one of these. For some reason, I think it will be a good investment. It will also look nice next to my Commemertive Silver Buffalo Dollar? Do you think they will sell out fast or do you think due to price it will be on sale for a while?

I'm hoping it'll be on sale for a while. Not enough $$ right now but maybe down the road.
