I note that some PCGS "genuine" slabs have a GN instead of a numerical 90-99 before the slash and the cert number. I assume that the GN stands for the genuine category but if PCGS can't list a number code to correlate with the defect making it genuine but not gradeable, then why isn't the coin gradeable. If the damage can't be listed by code then what are we talking about?
the 90-99 does mean something. Each number means what problem they found that made the coin ungradable by them No Grade Description 91 Artificial Color 92 Cleaning 93 Planchet Flaw 94 Altered Surfaces 95 Scratch / Rim Dent 97 Environmental Damage 98 Damage
"The GN code was used before PCGS started using 'genuine slabs' in December of 2008. You had to pay additional money ($100) to have authentic but problem coins slabbed and they were coded GN."
