I finally had a day off and decided to go up to ther coin shop to poke around and look at his franklin selection. I was looking in his tray and saw one that caught my eye. a '56 very nice probably a 62 or 63. had a $15.00 price on it. I was interested but I forgot my loop at home and wanted a closer look, I asked him to borrow his loop and he said. "Why do you need my loop?" I said to look closer at the coin, I forgot mine. He said " well. theres nothing to see it's a $15.00 coin not a $1,500.00 coin".
Now I have been in this shop many, many times. I just felt like there was something to hide. This is the same shop that had the ICG '64 Lincoln pr70 that I spoke of 2 weeks or so ago. I didn't let him know but I was so upset that I handed him the tray back, said thanks and left.
I am deciding If I will be going back there or not. I called a few places around. 1 shop sells only bullion and proof/mint sets. the other has "private showings by apointment only". nothing else for me around here. I enjoy looking up close dealing, handling (carefully of course) but maybe I am just stuck w/ebay and take my chances there. (that's not any better). 2 pawn shops around and no coins. 1 very shiny cleaned peso coin in a bezel.

Grovey,  That is a sad tale indeed. I don't know how well you know this guy but I would ask him if he is feeling alright. No joking, most often that type of reaction is because of some other situation then the one at hand. I think you should have said "I really love collecting and enjoy looking at my prospective purhases very closely. Is there a better time for me to come in and do this"? My shop guy has 5X lenses laying all over his counters. He will lend you a 10 or 20X and after a little fumbling even show you how to properly view through one!(My 20X makes me crazy because I shake a lot!) However if you do this often enough he will bring out an assortment of loupes and offer to sell you one! And sometimes to the really fussy buyer he will ask them if they want to use the " electron microscope" that he keeps in the back room! Keep Smiling  Mike... Since I travel extensively, I always like to search out local coin shops in my travels so I can pop in and see what is happening. I had good experiences and not so good experiences. Some people take lunches, I like to look at coins. Some shops remind me of a Mayberry barber shop where conversations and tales engulf the room whereas some look like a bomb just went off. Some look like museums...All in all, I never had somebody refuse to lend me their loop to look at their goods! Now, I would restate (almost sarcasticly) the question, "I am sorry...I don't travel with my loops...keys? Yes. Cellphone? Yes. Wallet? Yes...but a loop is not something I pack everyday. Now, I am sure you have some type of magnifier around here to look at your coins and if you would be so kind, my eyes are not as good as a loop so...WILL YOU GET OFF OF YOUR --- and WALK 3 FEET (usually there is always one behind the counter) and GET ME ONE! (then smile!)  I am only kidding, but obviously this guy doesn't know anything about customer service. Edited by zakgold

No, He wasn't busy only myself and 1 other guy I have spoken to before, was just bsing w/the shop owner. He was joking with the other guy. Anyway that brings up a point, Why am I trying to justify HIS mood. I am the customer. I work In customer service all day long. I work 60 hour weeks sometimes, demanding customers can be very exhausting but IT WAS MY CHOICE TO WORK THERE. therefore I must put up with it. on the other hand I enjoy it and enjoy helping people. I make people feel like they were helped and their problems solved. I follow up w/calls and resolutions and take care of my customers. so I guess my point is. IF HE IS HAVING A BAD DAY THAT'S HIS PROBLEMA.

grovey, unfortunately dealers are just people too. People have bad days and more often than not take it out on every other person that they see that day. Some people have the ability to turn that frustration inward and the world does not see it. I save mine for the employees  . Now you have been to the shop before. How were you treated during those visits? I would be hard pressed to make a decision based on one trip. Now if it were completely bad, I never return. However, only you know how it effects you. I deal with every person because I am not physic and have no idea who is going to buy coins, talk coins, sell coins, or just look. But I know many dealers who think that all customers not waving money around are a waste of time. Don't let this one episode bother you. Find another dealer or try to visit a show. I know that it isn't as easy as shopping at the neighborhood shop, but..... If you can't find another dealer close, drop me an email with the cities closet to you and I will forward a few dealers. I would go back and try again...he might just not have been feeling too good--and then he might be like that since you didn't buy his PF70 cent...

Understand your feeling exactly. I visit a dealer that tells me he is only interested in the sales of coins with 3 or more digits in the price tag. for those of us that want the "more common" coins - {(make me laugh because I collect Australian coins in the US and there is nothing common about that) he feels the same about those collecting US coins as well} well us commoners should find a good show or buy online but if we are interested he will pull a box or tray out of his display case. Aftermy second visit and "wonderful personalized" treatment, I do not go back there even though it was convient. As a side note since last November I have personally started 8 families collecting coins. they collectively have spent many thousands of dollars. the best part is NOT one cent of it went through his door. He is probably a good dealer. I know he is a good man Just needs a attitude adjustment. How does the line from the movie go- If you sell it they will buy. If you sell it with a smile ion your face they will buy lots more. rggoodie
