I think I saw recently a picture of a pattern Confederate gold dollar; it bugs me because I can't remember where. My question is this: How many pattern coins were the Confederates responsible for, and can anybody in the CCF post some illustrations of these? Report this Post to the Staff

biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 10/04/2010 10:46 am The Confederacy also minted a number of Federal design coins from leftover dies- 1861-O Half Dollar(3/4 of total mintage was minted by Louisiana after succession or the CSA), 1861-C and -D Half Eagles, and the 1861-O Double Eagle. The Half Dollar is the only reasonably affordable example. Report this Post to the Staff
Conder101 Bedrock of the Community United States 17884 Posts	Posted 10/05/2010 09:23 am The Confederacy never struck a pattern gold dollar. They did strike 1861-D gold dollars using Union dies. unlike the other coins struck by the confederacy using Union dies these are extremely easy to recognize because the Union did not strike any 1861-D gold dollars before the mint was taken over. (At this time the half dollars struck by the confederacy can be identified by the die variety. The 2,991 1861 O double eagles and 887 1861-C half eagles struck by the Confederacy can not be identified.) Report this Post to the Staff
