Also, any tips on how you can tell the difference would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Open 3. A Closed 3 almost looks like an "8".

Thanks Prethen...Is there any online reference that shows them next to each other so I can see the difference.

I looked but could not find any on my first few tries.

I think the above pictures show the difference pretty clearly. I'm not sure what other resource might show that difference other than perhaps a blow up of similar pictures. Those are the same pictures I used for a Coin World article last year.

Let your eyes flip back and forth between the two "3's" and it should be fairly apparent that the closed 3 has a very narrow gap. It was so narrow that the digit looked like an 8 and the Mint had to change the appearance of the digit.

I will be getting out my USB microscope tonight so I can get a good look.

Not doubting your attribution (which I totally agree with because of the the top portion of the 3), but now that I have two great reference pictures, I will enjoy taking a close up look.

Thanks again

Oh and by the way. I think I replied too quickly asking for picture references..

you edited your response and added your pictures seconds before I replied.

So no other reference is needed.
