Is there something wrong with the second 8 in the date, or is it just the camera angle?

Looks to be something missing. I checked VW & didn't find anything. It could have taken a hit there. You could contact seller and ask for a staight on pic.

I think that's exactly what the problem is, the coin is too angled..but the price is in english pounds and starting at $55 bucks its steep for an AU slider,

Last May I bought this 1898 dollar in an old ANACS MS-64 slab, for $45 total cost on ebay. Just look around and you should be able to find a solid BU example at a better price.
