hello, I know nothing about coins but a long, long time ago my friend and his cousins found a coin at a park and he gave it to me. I have currently misplaced the coin but seem to have some vague recollections about it and am dying to know what it is. any help would be greatly appreciated.

the coin is made of silver and was rather big, likely a silver dollar. on the front was a lady (I'm assuming lady liberty) that looked an awful lot like the statue of liberty. in the background there are rays of some sort. on the other side of the coin (this is fuzzy memory now) there is something that looks like a flag pole with MAYBE an eagle on top of the flagpole. but if there is the flag pole looking thing, or maybe it is a pillar or column, takes up most of the space. again, I haven't seen this coin in roughly 3 years so it's hard to remember. I am sure it is silver because my friends and I used to blow on the side and listen for the ring.

another hint is that I remember the date wasn't a specific date, like 1996 or something. rather it was something like "1800-1900" actually printed on the coin. I would like to say that 1900 was actually one of the dates but I am not sure at all. I'm hoping that people can shoot out ideas so that I can google search them and hopefully find a match! again any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks.

Hi Snooba, the Peace dollar is .900 silver same as the morgan, it was minted between 1921-1928 and 1934-35 and it is 38.1mm in diameter. Its about the same size as an Aussie crown and very very nice Hope that helps.

Hello! Thanks for your help. I was able to find out from another forum that the coin is actually this:

although it wasn't specified on what it is exactly. does anyone know where I can purchase this coin? and how much it'll set me back? I'm looking to give it to the person who gave me it as a present.

Hi David and welcome to the forum. Based on your pic, it is a 1989 Congressional Bicentennial commemorative silver dollar. The dual date you referred to would be 1789-1989, the bicentennial of the first US Congress. It is a commemorative coin but it is legal tender with a face value of $1 and produced by the US Mint. It is 90% silver so you would never want to spend it for face value though. Two versions are available- proof and uncirculated. The uncirculated variety has a finish similar to any other coin you have seen. The proof will have a "frosted" design and mirror surfaces giving it a cameo appearance. The best place to purchase one would be ebay or a coin shop if you have one in your area. Either version would cost ~$20-30.

The real mystery of your find is how in the heck did a commemorative silver coin end up in a park
