take 1 coin from cave 1, 2 coins from cave 2, 3 coins form cave 3 etc until you have 13 coins from cave 13. Be sure you mark them so you know which ones are from each cave! Put that all on the scale. If they were all real it would weigh 910 grams. Depending on what you get for weight you will be able to determine which cave had the fake coins. For example if the stack weighed only 909, the fake coin was in cave one, if it weighed 897, your fakes coins are in cave 13

Ali-Baba can take 1 coin out of the 1st cave and weigh it with his only weigh in. If it is 10 grams then he can take it and go buy a new scale so he can weigh all the other caves to find the counterfeit ones (to sell on ebay of course). If the coin weighs 9 grams then all the other caves have the real gold coins in them.

Correct again! Basically the difference between 910 and the actual weight will tell you the number of the chamber with fake coins.

Svslav:

I have not reached the 50 posts to use the email system; also I live in Mexico, so postage raises considerably. The intention of sending a reward to all who answered a question is great of you, so please send mine to the one who made the post that corresponds to the number of the day you were born.

Good job weavus!

Thanks for the quiz svslav! I can definitely say I learned from it, which I know was one of your goals - thank you.

Got it, Guadelupe! Thanks for not being too difficult.

Thanks, Scooby, just wanted to share some bits that I knew. Originally my questions were supposed to be heavier leaning into UK coinage - my thing, but I tamed it down a tad.

I would like to say thank you to everybody who gave this a try, spent your time on researching questions, and gave your feedback and provided us with some extra information!

As I mentioned in the beginning of this thread I was a little intimidated by this contest myself, so thanks for helping me and letting it happen!

Congratulations to all runners up, and special congrats to weavus for winning the grand prize!

thank you svslav for the great contest. I do love a good mastermind game but I also love history and this contest made me go do some research. I really did learn a few things about British coinage and I can see why they don't go to the Euro...they wouldn't have any cute names for them! And those Brits and their traditions... LOL

thanks again
