When I first got back into collecting, a 1906D Liberty Head $5 gold coin; it is graded Unc details by NGC. I know cleaned coins are worth less than uncleaned, but is it worth only spot, or any more than this? Would I be better off putting the $$ I could get for it towards, say a 1/4 oz proof gold eagle, or an uncleaned $2.50 gold piece (I'm looking for investment guesses).

VF/XF undamaged common date gold coins are just above melt right now... I think they are great investment right now.. You get the gold, and the "bump" of it being an older US coin. ps I think proof modern gold (unless bought cheap) would not have a lot of room for profit.

Not unless a fractional buffalo and then its almost 3x spot.

So basically unless I can get a proof 1/4 eagle at near melt, I'd do just as well investment wise to keep the old half eagle? It's not a bad looking coin, just want to make the wisest decision.
