The other day I was in Walmart with my adult daughter and I saw that I had received a well worn '47 wheatie in my change. I got excited and showed it to my daughter. She knows that I collect coins and asked if it was worth anything. I said not much more than face value. Then she wanted to know why I got so excited over a 'penny'. I tried to explain to her that this coin was minted the year I was born, that they don't mint this coin anymore, and finding one in pocket change is a fairly rare experience. I told her that I also wonder who my have handled this coin--maybe someone famous--and where it may have been in the last 64 years. Then she gave me that look that a daughter gives her father when she thinks he is going senile and said you know, your nuts. I laughed and said yes, I'm nuts--about coins.

I know she did not understand (I love her anyway) but thank goodness for a forum where people do understand the simple joy of finding a 'wheatie' in your change.
Rest in Peace

I get the same excited about a 1972-S Lincoln Penny, I found in my change. Even though the mint produced millions and millions of them. And the penny was worth only the penny it is. The condition was great. A nice bright red, with great detail in Lincolns face and the steps of the monument were sharp. I can't bare to put it back in circulation, so it sits on the glass coaster on my desk. Same with a 1965 Washington quarter I found in change. Great detail and the reeding on the edge was as sharp as when it was minted. I sent that coin on to a Washington collector on this website, at no charge. I had to send it on to some one who would appreciate it!

I know it is nothing special, too, but they are still fun to find!

My Grandson found a 1902 penny the other day in a bunch we bought, and you would have thought he hit the lottery.

My wife gives me that look everyday. Even when I am not "messing" with my coins.

A few weeks ago I bought a folder to put my wheat cents in, and in the change I got a 1950's Wheat penny. What are the chances?

Here in Hawaii we still find a few 'wheaties' a week. I think a lot are from tourists from Japan bringing them back. Lots of silver coins also.

Yep - I know the look well. My wife has just learned to deal with my excitement over such things. I get a similar look when I pick up change on the ground.
