I am really having a lot of problems with the 2009 pennies and where they are supposed to go in the Whitman album. There are a total of 8 slots for 2009, but all it says underneath each slot is "variety 1, variety 2, 3 & 4". How do you know which penny goes in which slot? I have asked dozens of people and coin dealers and no one seems to know. Red Book doesn't tell me either!! Help!

LP1 Birthplace. The log cabin
LP2 Formative Years. Log splitter
LP3 Proffesional Life. Illinois Capitol Building
LP4 Presidency. US Capitol Building

To complicate it even more there are actually 20 varieties. Including the 4 proofs and 8 satins from Mint sets

Thanks for your help amida17! I was beginning to think that I would never figure this out. It would be nice if Whitman put a note in there "on the side" with your description above. Have a great weekend!

And as to the Red Book, it surely does on pages 121 in the 2012 edition. However, partially true since it does not stipulate variety 1 or type 1 or anything similar. As noted already there is this explanation using LP1, LP2, etc. which is really sort of the same thing as type 1 or variety 1 or something other than that. The picture of the different ones on page 121 I guess is supposed to make everyone realize that they are in order as T.1, Var.1 or whever someone lables them as in an Album.
For my Whitman Classic Albums I use the blank pages and the rub off date/mint sheets. That way I can put all 20 varieties, types, or whatever you call them in one Album.

at least Whitman has them labeled a bit, in my Dansco album they just have 4 sets of slots labeled "2009 2009-D"

I believe the problem is that the album pages were printed after they found out there will be four cent varieties, but before they knew what the actual designs (and names) would be.

Personally I really like the shield pennies. I hope they keep them for awhile.

They should keep making them for the next 50 years or until the cent ceases production, whichever comes first.
