Thanks muddler, your photos are great. I find it much easier getting nice images of dug coins than shiny ones. It would be nice if my holders weren't so scratched also.

I thought 1998 RFK commemorative dollar held its value. I picked up a MS69 slabbed coin for $31. I do have a 1998 RKF set in OGP, but couldn't pass up this deal. I'll post a picture when I receive it.
I like the US modern commemorative dollars, mostly the UNC versions.

New this forum and coin collecting. I found this forum on a search... My father passed awa y in 1998 and was an avid collector of coins. I just now started going through his coins and wanted to get them appraised,went to the local coin store with 72 comm coins uncirculated and proofs in the mint packages with COA papers in the box. He offered spot silver price. I was shocked to say the lease. But it did get me really checking these out closer. I have not noticed any milking people speak of on any of them....What causes this and how do I keep it from starting?

The milky spots I believe are caused by storage in a humid environment, the proof coins are more susceptible to it. You can see many of my earlier coins have some spotting. During that time I was living in Portland Oregon and had my collection in bank basement vaults. Some are ugly and are only of bullion value but some are toning nicely like this one.   |

Am I reading this post correctly, US proofs are developing milk spots? I thought this only happened to Canadian Bullion coins the Silver Maples. They develop spots due to being improperly cleaned at the mint, during the minting process. I find this interesting to hear and would like to learn more. Many people store their bullion maples in air tight capsules to protect them from any contaminates that can trigger milk spots.

@pocket change 50: The milky haziness / toning seen on some modern US proof coins is different from the milk spots seen on the Silver Maple Leaf (SML) bullion coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM). The change seen on the US coins is a result of how the coins were stored (i.e., environmental factors) after they were purchased. The milk spots on the SMLs are a result of the RCM's internal production process. Collecting history one coin or medal at a time! (c) commems. All rights reserved.
