I'm new to the hobby this year. I have a Bounty Hunter- Gold Digger. (Probably the most inexpensive one). I can't complain I've had alot of cool finds. I dug a couple of horse shoes today! I went to the park yesterday, I found 40 cents. Two dimes and 20 pennys. Just one coin per hole, and alot of trash. My question - How long did it take you to find your first silver or gold? I'm READY!

First silver was just over six months, it was a 24" Sterling necklace with 2 charms and a sterling men's wedding band on it.
First gold took a bit longer, 2 1/2 years. It was a small 10K Ruby ring with several missing stones. I took out the rest of the stones and it weighed 1.1gm. Remember these three words and you will be successful.

One customer wrote about an incredible gold find within a month of buying his GTI-2500 Garrett. A nice ring with a big diamond, he sold it to a jeweler for $650.

I started out with a Tesoro Compadre and I guess it was just luck, but the first thing I dug was a silver ring at the beach. The rest of that day was junk and a few coins. I agree with Tim, just have patience. You can also do some research to locate areas that are older and that might have not been hit to hard by other detectorists.

Update: I went back to the same park yesterday and found my first silver! A dime. A 1942 merc at that! The weird thing was that it was only about one inch down, if that even. I found a 46 wheatie too. So 5 months for my 1st silver. I struck up a conversation with another MD'er there. He says that old park is full of old coins. He had a $2000 Whites, a pinpointer, wireless headphones. Nice. Well I'm rambling so time to go.

I agree with the P.P.P reply. Also, learn your machine and do not try to get caught up with all the latest technology and high end types. I run across guys out there that are pretty snooty when it comes to MD'ing. They have a grand of equiptment and think my bounty hunter tracker IV is a laugher. You should hear em laugh when I pull out a 52 gram .925 necklace and a 10 and 14K gold ring along with the usual heavy bag of coins. I love giving them that cocky smile and SILENCE as I walk away. Have to admit though that most of these guys are younger than myself so they still need some life lessons.  I also see some old timers out there with what one would now call ancient machines. Mostly Whites. I mean 70 year old's and up. (the guys:) One guy had a full roll of silver dimes one day. They know what I mean.  Can you Dig it  |

I got my self a Garrett GTI 2500 in four days about two hours per day I manage to find 228 coins,two dollars,loonies,quarters,dimes,nichles and 158 pennies. No silver,no gold hopefuly someday I will find something that sound like silver or gold just have to be at the right place for it.  |

The second time out with my DFX, I dug a merc in the playground of the abandoned elementary school that I attended 35 years ago.
Three years and 200 silvers later, I hit the trashiest old spots I can find. That's where my Explorer and I find the goods.
When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

If you are finding wheatbacks, you will find silver. A couple of reasons silver is rare:
1. People generally have more pennies than dimes in their pockets.
2. A dropped penny blends into the grass, but a dropped dime shines brightly. So it is much more likely that a dime will be found before it sinks into the ground.
But if you are finding wheats, then you know the area has not been searched before (or has not been searched well).

My 3rd or 4th time out I found a 14 k gold earring. I haven't detected in over 3 years now, but plan to hit my new town up. We have a set of bleachers that was built in the late 30's that the town plans to revamp. I can imagine the old stuff down there.
I have an ACE 250. One guy asked me if I was having fun with my toy one time detecting under the bleachers of my wife's old high school. I pulled out an old brass lighter, which was my first find ever. I remember thinking, how do you like my toy now?

hi I use an etrac as said before be patience
i have been detecting for 10 tears and have only found 4 gold coins lots of silver coins
i do go beach detecting but no much and have had 3 gold rings
slow and low is the way to go

ive had an ace250 since June 2010 and still haven't found silver/gold. But that's mainly because I only get to hunt a couple times a year due to school. My Uncle's farmhouse is from the 1700s so I'm bound to hit something there eventually.

My son and I have have been digging since early May for about 3 hours each weekend. So far just one thin silver dime, and of course a lot of clad coins. We haven't lost hope yet. Someday we will find something big. I am sure!

I just got stated this month and today I found my first silver quarter. It was from 1945 and looks like it is brand new.

ive done about 8 hours of detecting and I found silver today, in a newish (15yo) park around the corner I was hoping to just find lost coins in the surface covering and gain a bit more practise. also found and lost a piece of rusted wire with what looked like a small silver ball about 2mm round on one end. first time out I did find a small piece of a silver earring but I seen that before I detected it so I'm not counting it. just a shame I'm finding silver in a town built after the discovery of gold http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...IMG_0010.jpgEdited by erkle
