Hey all. I was just rummaging through some cents that were my grandfathers and trying to fill some empty slots in my albums when I came upon a 1973 cent, decorated with a basketball player and a basket above the date. They had to be made with pretty tiny punches. LOL. You can see where it "stressed" the reverse. Anyway, I thought it was interesting, you guys have probably seen a bunch of them. I'd take a picture, but my macro stinks(I have a dickens of a time with my marbles, let alone a cent). I figure if people collect hobo nickles, they probably collect stuff like this. I figured you guys might be more excited about it than my wife was. ROTFL.

There are a lot of people who collect counter stamped coins and some have a very big collection of them. Post a picture on your interesting find.

Hi Dave There are quite a few different cents like this , from Kennedy to basketball. They were created as a novelty coin. I collect marbles too !! I have to tell you I used to buy from a guy on ebay who had both coins and Marbles ,,at times it was tough to decide which to buy . Metalman |

I know what you mean. I know a lot about marbles, but virtually nothing(well maybe 3 weeks worth) about coins. But, man, I have to say that the coins are more addicting! I like to read, and there is so much to learn about coins. I love it that coins are so available to the newby. I could go for months without finding a desirable marble(even in WV), but I can find cool coins at face value at the bank. Man, the hardest thing so far seems to be memorizing prices and grading so I don't get taken at flea markets, etc. It's WAY harder than marbles. LOL. Anyway, I'll "try" to take a pic of the "counter stamped?" cent this evening. I have a Kodak 650 and I can't get closer than a foot or so, the macro stinks! Thanks a lot, guys. -Dave

Dave were all to help you with all those things ,,what coins are you collecting ?
I take from your initial post that you are into Lincolns at least a little ?
That just happens to be a comfort zone for me !!

Thanks, Metalman. My mom gave me some stuff that was my grandfathers, mostly lincolns but some foreign stuff too. He was somewhat of a hobby collector, though mostly pocket change stuff I think. He had cents rolled by year from like 60-76 or so and a big tin of wheats. Its been fun and educational cherry picking through stuff. I bought a Red Book, a Whitman ANA guide, and I'm reading the Coin Collectors Survival Manual, which although perhaps a little out of my scope, is still very informative re: grading IMHO. I went through my change collection and only need 5 Roosevelts to finish a 65-99 book. I thought that was pretty cool. I'm 17 nickles shy of a 62-96 Littleton book. I have 40 cents in my 09-40 Lincoln book. And I've really been enjoying combing through Kennedy rolls from the bank, I have 47 different ones so far. Its too much fun! My wife thinks I'm a total geek, because I've written down my wants on a small note pad which I carry around with me. LOL. I just bought '71 and '74 brown box Ike proofs too. I might have to get some more next week. Thanks for all of your help so far. This is a great forum. If you ever need marble help, PM me. I hang at some of those forums. Years ago my wife thought the same thing about me collecting coins she said it was a geek thing. Until I went into her closet and counted 38 pair of shoes, end of discussion.

These are interesting coins ,, Bobby(forumdad) has a few pics of some of the other ones ,, I just checked for mine but I guess I have deleted it ,, I will put it on my list to Photograph ,,I have several new purchases to do anyway .
