Ok, I'll admit, before joining the forum I was strictly collecting paper money. I haven't collected coins for probably over a year. Since joining the forum I have bought the following:
A complete set of Franklin half's
20+ Indian cents
40+ additional Franklin and Walkers
a 1931 S Wheat cent in MS condition
and various other silver coins

This week alone I spent $220 on coins. (31 S in MS, 20 halfs) I haven't gotten my windshield on my car replaced. The car still has a dent from hitting a deer. And I haven't saved as much as I usually do.

Does anyone think I have a "problem" here... It's like if I see a deal I can't pass it up. I think the only way I can stop this little habbit is to stop looking on ebay, stop coming to the forum, and stop looking on craigslist.com. Does anyone else seem to have the same problem I have?
Good things,
Ty

Well, if you beat the deer in a fight, I figure you deserve to celebrate somewhat.

I think we all had that problem sometime in our life. The problem is, there are so many things to collect. The one thing I learned, is those coins will be around tomorrow. Just don't put yourself in debt, then you won't be able to buy any coins for a while.

I have the same problem. BUT my Wife really doesn't mind. Her reasoning is: I don't smoke ( $5.00+ a pack, average smoker - 1 pack a day), I don't drink (you figure the savings - $10-$20/week) I think you see where I'm going.

Just don't spend that kind of money every week. Once in a while OK. Consider it a small investment.

It's a good, wholesome addiction, and one that can be financially rewarding if you deside to switch addictions.

Besides, no offense intended, what else does one have to do in Minot, especially in the wintertime?

It is an addiction, just not one that will kill you. The one thing about coin collecting, you always have money !!

Gary Burke,
LOL, your right. The slogan around here is "why not Minot?" It is pretty slow and whatnot. The only coin dealer here is a jerk and overcharges on pretty much everything he has. He has some very very very nice coins but hes still a jerk and I won't every buy from him. So Minot, for me, consists of going to college, collecting coins, and working. So your right, not much else to do.

And evereyone else,
Yes, its not a bad habbit. But I need to start preparing myself for some things I need to get done later this year. And I still just keep buying. But it will stop... nah, it won't... but I think I will slow down a bit here soon. I find it kind of sad that my currency collection has about a $3,000 value and my savings account has a $220 value...

While the specifics are slightly different, the first post looks like it was written by me Lol.

After my last coin purchase I now KNOW I have a problem. It's just so nice and old and shiny and pweedy and I still can't wipe the darn smile off my face since I got it! I hope I return to normal soon otherwise people will be wondering what I'm on.

And I need a new car for the wipers!

One good thing though, I decided it was either coin collecting or Lotto. What a waste of money Lotto was. I reckon I've chosen the better of the two addictions.
Rest in Peace

Ty, Just kidding about Minot. I'm sure it has its good qualities.

I went to college in Gunnison (Colorado), and believe me, there wasn't much to do unless you were a skier.

My sister-in-law, many years ago, was directed to the wrong airplane, and ended up in Minot. Luckily for her, a stewardess was willing to share her apartment with her until she was able to fly out.

That is so funny. I don't even want to know what this place was like many years ago. I guess it's ok. It has the airforce base here so the town isn't a total wrech. But the only entertainment they have around here is either movies, drinking, or ... Yeah, those are the only two.

Minot is not so bad, the small town where I live is so dull for a good time we go down to the river and watch the bridge rust!

I also am addicted, I know I could pay of my credit cards sooner and save money by not using my cash to buy coins, but the rational part of my frontal cortex gets overridden by my emotional center that says, "yeah, but you're saving money by buying coins because they will go up in price by the time you pay off your credit and have cash again to buy coins. So..I save more money by buying the coins and dealing with the interest on the credti card pay out". The credit cards, by way, do not have coin purchases on them. When that happens I will have to enter a 12 step program.

If you have a problem then I must have the same problem.
Because this past week alone I have purchased the following.
1.) Complete set of Franklin half dollars.
2.) Complete set of Kennedy half dollars.
3.) 10 additional Franklin's.
4.) 1970 - 1990 Proof Sets
5.) 1996 Mint Set with W/Dime
6.) 1964 Mint Set
7.) 1995 Civil War Battlefield Proof Silver Dollar

And it is not even the weekend yet.
I agree with Spider5689 just don't put yourself into debt buying coins. But continue enjoying the hobby

Only the individual can identify "a problem" of spending too much on
a hobby. Are you really enjoying the hobby or do you like to gamble
with the bidding process? There is a difference in my humble opinion.
I would encourage you to identify your real hobby, i.e. coin collecting
or gambling.

Forward march, hup 2-3-4 Hup 2-3-4 I DON'T KNOW BUT I've BEEN TOLD, MINOT STUFF IS MIGHTY COLD. Hey, Tykster, isn't gambling legal up there. Years ago I had a good friend that ran Frontier, Inc. They manufactured Ag truck bodies. Ever heard of them? Oh, yea, I was in the Air Force and flew in and out of Minot on a couple of occasions. Love those B-52s. Jim1953

NO! No problem at all. You live one time, and one time only, so you might as well enjoy it this time around, it's the only one you're getting. Of course, moderation is a virtue...
