Here's a thought about buying coins while in college.
When I was attending college, I bought a 1900 $5 Gold Piece, BU, for about $20. Can you imagine what I would have now if I had made a bunch more coin purchses back then!!!!

When I was in the Air Force the slogan "Why Not Minot" was used to try and get people to volunteer for duty there! The folks I met that had spent time there said it was absolutely freezing with absolutely nothing to do. The Air Force actually had brochures made up showing all the on base activities that were available in an attempt to portray the base as something of a resort! Yikes!!! Mike  |

I know I have the same problem as the rest. I spent alot of money in march, and I also looked throught about 300 dollar in half dollar and didn't spend any money on those all 300 went back into the bank. here is what I bought in march 9 Franklin half dollars all MS 1 Seated dime1 1913- type 1 Buffalo nickel1 china panda silver dollar 1 silver Mexican libertad 1 Australian Koula 1 Australina Kookuburra 1 UK Bratinna 2 Australian Florins So yes I have a problem Oh yas plus I went to Las Vegas and bought half of those coins there. But like others have said I feel it is not a problem if all your bill and you do not go in debt over it then no problem, my wife might disagree alittle she feels I spend to much on coins. |

We all have that problem from time to time. My wife says I'm obsessed with coins right now. I think she's right The only thing I can say is that all of us could have a worse addiction that causes us to spend the same amount of money and leaves us with nothing later on. I feel the money I'm spending on coins is somewhat of an investment. I don't buy for that reason, but I know they'll retain their value better than half the other items we buy. |

Compared to some people in this country with $40,000 in credit card debt and nothing to show for it except a garage full of junk, your practically a financial genius.
It's probably not too smart, but I've always been pretty derelict with cars too. One time I had a windshield wiper motor that was going bad. It would move the blades forward but the blades hung up coming back. So I had a string tied on one of the arms and was pulling the wiper blades back each time they hung up. Allowing such a distraction in florida, in summer thunder storms, on florida roads, with florida mullets wasn't too smart of me. I just ride the bus now. I'm sick of cars. Sick of working to pay for them and then working to keep them together after they're paid for.

Tykimeister I can not see where you have a problem. You can still see out the windshield can't you? The dent adds character to the car, so no problem there. Saving money, you have probably saved more money with the value of the coins than you would have saved otherwise, and they will increase in value faster than most interest rates. You only have a problem when you wake in the morning,at the computer on ebay, where you fell asleep the night before and stay on there until you leave for work, then run to a computer to check ebay at lunch, and as soon as you get home you are back on ebay until you fall asleep at the computer still on ebay. Here's my logic- if I spend all my money on coins, at least I'll always have money left over. And besides, I'm not old enough to have a car anyways...so that's a bunch of money I can put towards coins. My parents think that I'm crazy, especially since in the last month I spent over $500 on two coins- both of them were draped bust halves. And now that I'm considering buying a flowing hair half, they're exchanging the "this comes from your side of the family" looks.

I don't have this problem, because there are no funds left over to buy coins, after I pay all the bills. So purchases are scarce for me. But I wish I had the problem. My wife just started a part time job last night, so who knows, just maybe I will be able to sneak an extra coin in here and there. Steve |

i don't think I have a problem with bidding wars. Most items I make one bid and leave it tell it's over and wait and see which ones I win. I always try and get things cheep so I don't win items too often, but I bid very often, but only once. Most silver coins I will base my bids on the silver value alone.
I think the problem is that I keep buying to cheep stuff. I have completely stopped buying cull or AG coins. Well, unless its a 1700's coin. But I think I need to stop buying all the cheep coins and save up for the expensive ones. This will be a hard task.

I have coins in my collection that cost me less than 5 bucks that I would not take 1000.00 for ,, I have coins that cost me nothing that I would not take 10,000 dollars for .
Cheap and expensive are nothing more than what is valuable or worthless to you ,, they are not always synonomous with dollars and cents !!

Hey all, I agree with much of what has been said. I have the problem also. Spending money when it miught be needed elsewhere is a problem, not just with coins either. I have to agree you only go around once and might as well do what you enjoy while on this Earth. I do not drink anymore but I do smoke, too much. If I put all the $$$ I have puffed away in coins over the years I would have a colection worthy of a museum. For now I have to be happy spending 50 buck a month but if I love the coins it's the same as spending 10,000 to me. It's not the price or value of the collection it's the appreciation I have for it and the interesting stories behind the coins I collect. Over and Out. Tony |

I can understand that. In the past I have bought coins for silver price and less but have found this to become unsatisfying after a while. Bullion silver just doesn't do it for me anymore. I suppose it's because I'm buying for the silver more than for the coin. So no more bullion silver for me unless there's something special about the coin. Even bullion gold coins have lost their appeal. This is where it can get expensive. I love my last purchase but it wasn't cheap. I'm not sure where I'm heading in this hobby now but it seems I get more satisfaction if I save longer, buy less often and get something more rare and in higher grade. I'm down to buying one coin a month. I have read of investors that only buy one or two coins per year. That's not for everyone of course. Each to their own. |
