sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 12/08/2013 05:58 am Coins can be destructively tested at every stage of their manufacture by the mint that produces them, just like any other object that is subject to quality control. Coins can also be subjected to non destructive testing. XRF, weighing measuring and close examination for strike quality are examples. Some coins pass, some don't. Almost all test specimens are destroyed and are recycled. Some that escape recycling and leave the mint can have significant numismatic value. Many are the threads in this forum where coins are the subject of mint errors. Testing is essential to arrive at the target level of quality, and to maintain it.
