Hello again. I recently picked up another small lot of ancients and have figured out 3 of them but these last 3 are giving me some trouble. Any help would be appreciated.
#1 This one has what appears to be a head with maybe a spiked helmet with the letters SAR AUG on the outside that I can read. The other side has a large SC in the middle with what looks like MTRD on the outside of it.
I don't have an accurate enough scale to weigh these. All I have right now is a postal scale that weighs by 5 grams. Not much help in these small coins. I measured them across as they appear in the photos. 1: 14.25 mm 2: 17.25 mm 3: 15.6 mm
My educated guesses would be that the first is a Claudius I quadrans, with a modius reverse, the second is a Roman provincial of Corinth, Pegasus reverse, possibly Tiberius and the last is an antoninianus of Claudius II, with an altar reverse (CONSECRATIO).
Thank you Valecrucis. I think you nailed it on the claudius I and II. I'm still not sure on the pegasus coin. The obverse is so toasted it's so hard to compare. I'll call it a tiberius unless someone else comes along with more info. Thanks again.
No problem. Glad to be of help. Here is a pic of a Tiberius Corinth AE with Pegasus reverse that I have in my collection. I am by no means sure of your coin, but I think I might be able to persuade myself that it has a similar bust on the obverse. However Corith produced bronzes with a Pegasus reverse at least up until Geta, I think, so with such a worn obverse, I couldn't really say.
