nice. Can really see the PL'ish on the first reverse picure.

I need to start VAMming my Morgan dollars. A few VAMs were noted when I purchased them, but I haven't verified those or looked at the others, yet

Are you kidding me?

That thing isn't Mint State, is it? The obverse is slider-ish but the reverse disagrees.

For the record, readers, 1884-S is the rarest of all Morgans in Mint State.

I think its a no problem 61, the way they grade 84 S coins the reverse is a solid 63+

OK, if you like it in Mint State then I'm thinking you're a number low on the grade. Even with the big gouge behind the hair I'm seeing a 63 but you're low on it so I must not be seeing something, even grading strictly.

Still think it's a 62.

Holy cow, PCGS has a 67 and a 68? I was just looking on Heritage....
Rest in Peace

Very nice Morgan! I assume this is going to PCGS in your next group?

Well I get to FUN around 5:20 PM Thursday so I will first check if they can get it back to me by Sat Noon when I have to get to the airport. If not it will go in to NGC if they can get it back to me by that time.

Almost all the 84 S coins are PL'ish and have polished dies so they get harshly graded. I think the coin could 62 but I would be OK with any 60 grade.

You know, the colors look a lot like the VAM-14.16 you posted. Are they from the same stable?

Key Dates like this get graded much harder then other dates. You see the same thing on common high grade dates like the 1879,1880 & 1881 S Morgan's.

You got that right. Both would fit very nice in any top registry set.

NGC has a little over 400 of these, and PCGS a little over 300, in Mint State. Given the overwhelming jump in value between grades, one can reasonably assume that these numbers are heavily diluted by crackout/resubs so I'd be surprised if more than 250-300 are actually extant.
