This coin belongs to a friend of mine... it has no "liberty" on the obverse. I told him it could have been removed but my question is, has anyone else seen this error on a 44 cent? And if not, is it most likely a fake?
There really are only two possibilities - the "Liberty" was effaced by hand (very possible), or this area of the coin was struck through a grease-filled die (slightly more likely).
I would say Greaser. There is a uniform swelling of the surface where liberty should be. Someone would have to have been very precise in removing liberty , leaving a swell and no dips.
All the above that's been said is true: could be a " Greaser" or it has been altered. Question is, why? There's no money here is there? I mean... what could it (in this condition) be worth? 10bux? 20?
