megs61 New Member United States 28 Posts	Posted 11/12/2016 09:00 am Hi. I am new to this hobby. I am glad to have been directed to this forum to educated myself on coins. I am more interested in Lincoln cents and have been going to the bank and just going through rollls to see what I can find. Of course being new I really don't know what I'm looking at so it sure will help to get all of your expert options! So I found this penny and it looks link zinc is showing through but when I weighed it it weighs 2.3 grams as did a dime on my scale. Also looking at the rim the letting sure does flow over. BStrauss3 Pillar of the Community United States 4605 Posts	Posted 11/12/2016 09:41 am Just wear. Cents from 1983 on are no longer pure copper, they are Zinc with a thin copper plating. When the plating wears off, the underlying zinc is exposed.
