1938 Dime That Has Had A Rough Life. What Is This Error?

Going through my latest acquisitions and came across this dime. I was like cool, I only have one other 1938 dime. I flipped it over and it looks like the obverse was damaged post-production. But, checking it with a 10x shows die cracking that extends onto the rim. I'm not 100% that this is a lamination issue. Any insight into what caused this section to be (appears to be) ripped away from the coin?

That looks like a lamination,then the piece eventually fell off. I'm assuming anyways.

Definitely a lamination error. Some of it is still retained above the IND. It's had a hard life too! Thanks for sharing.

That is a great looking lamination, it has also seen a lot of usage in it's day.
