I collected most of my coins in Compton/Lynwood CA (near LA) in the 50's and 60's, but always saved silver and bought a number of Silver Eagles with they came out in the late 80's. Just recently, I turned older and decided to consolidate the 5 boxes of coins I've been carting around. Got it down to one by selling all the silver, year sets, etc. With the proceeds I filled holes in my real collections: Lincoln's, Buffalo's, Jefferson's, Mercuries, Roosevelt's Washington's, Franklin's, and Peace $'s. Only collected through the mid-60's when pennies and silver changed over. I think I may work on Indians and type quarters next.

My favorite coin is an 1853 quarter. I was about 9 and going through rolls of pennies at the bank in Lynwood when a man approached and asked what I was doing. After I told him, he told me he was a scout leader and gave me the quarter. Nice guy.

You sound like a traditional modern U.S. coin collector. to the club! Do you still have that quarter that scout leader gave you?

Oh! Really? I didn't realize that was the quarter he gave you! Nice!!

Your story reminds me of when I was 12 in 1964. I saved 50 penny's, got on my bike and road five miles to the nearest bank. I reached up and put the 50 penny's on the counter. I asked the teller if she had a Kennedy half dollar, I still have it today plus a few more.
