I bought a coin on ebay last year (I was a beginner last year), a 1925 half-Crown (rare date) and paid about 17 pounds for it judging by a blurry photograph and when it arrived, what had looked a shiny possibly high grade coin turned out to have been severely polished so it was much lower graded, in fact it was only a G to Vg grade. I sold it back on ebay and got about a fiver for it. I was crazy enough to believe the blurriness wasn't deliberate, even though I knew how it could be a big con trick.

While studying in College, I needed a computer. I sold nearly my entire collection to buy a 286 in 1989. For those of you not old enough to know what that it, your watch has more power now. Value of my collection if I had kept it? About $9,000. Value of a 286? $0. Value of the lesson? Priceless.

What is worse, I didn't even finish the degree. It took me a few years before I could bring myself to collect again.
