Years ago I put together a mostly PCGS "Grading Set" that I carry around. I have MS61 to MS66
Morgan dollars (various dates) and it has been somewhat instrumental in determining providing a ball park "grade" for
Morgan dollars. Unfortunately, this is still subjective and is not conclusive of a particular coin's grade.
Morgan dollars are all over the grading chart as some dates are historically famous for weak strikes, others for luster and others are not the same even in the same grade. Some even change "apparent" condition simply due to die wear ..... thus all MS65s are NOT equal! I have many
Morgan dollars that are unquestionally have never circulated and are beautiful coins with hardly a mark on 'em, (MS66 condition coins) but the luster is not there as much as an earlier strike would be.
Anyway, I sold the "set" long ago and now rely on my 45+ years experience, Photograde and other grading guides and knowledge gained, sometimes the hard way, with being in this business.
Regardless, take note: Eye appeal nowadays is everything to a coin's value and wether it rapidly sells or sits in a case for literally years without any takers. So, all my coins nowadays are "eye appealing" - no heavy damage, no spots, no distracting marks and defects.
