Ever notice how when an organization is either making no progress or falling behind, the first thing they do is change their name and/or logo? So much simpler than solving their problems.

The ANA has announced that they're going back to their old book logo, and going to eliminate the current one.

Fine by me. I was one of many who felt the current logo sucked when it came out, and I see nothing about it to have changed my mind. It looks like it was a crayon drawing by some kid who had never seen a real coin. And they actually wasted the members' money having it made!

The king is dead, long live the king.

"...So much simpler than solving their problems"

I used to do corporate identity programs, but I now find the practice amusing unless really necessary. Then again, agencies are more than happy to sell clients on the urgencies of "branding".

The logo is usually just the tail end of a typically complex restructure/merger or new identity/strategy, replete with untold pages of corp-speak affirming how they're now somehow "improved", like that old "Bionic Man" TV show: "Better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster, etc." It's the corporate equivalent of a New Year's resolution--but with an enormous bar tab. It's a bit of a fad--with limited results.

What irked me was instead of going to the 30,000 so members for a new logo, they picked some hack who just happened to be in the local phone book. A huge slap in the face to the many artists in the membership who would have put some soul into a logo.

You would be surprised. They most likely didn't hire an independent "hack," but a larger agency.
Why hire a cheap hack when you can get pay $$$ for flattering presentations directed right at the CEO?
They certainly could've put more "soul" into it, but then again--most executive teams don't like "soul", even if they still have theirs.
