Hello everyone,

I felt in love of this beautiful archaic Skione tetradrachm showing Protesilaos on its obverse... Just wanted to share it with the community!

@ancient67, that is an interesting piece. We don't normally see such a dendritic structure on struck coins, but it does sometimes happen with ancients. I especially like the die break on the rev. I've recommended to the mods that this thread be moved over to the ancients section of CCF.

Very interesting pattern which I believe was caused by the crystallization of the silver. Be careful not to drop the coin on a hard surface, it just might shatter into a million pieces.

Protesilaos.

I've seen similar surface patterning on other Skione AR's, but never to this extreme. Pics in the collage below are from four different Skione coins. I don't know if this has something to do with that region's flan preparation, soil conditions, die manufacture, or what?

Sorry to answer late, it was night here in France...

The coin was struck around 480-470 BC. It's weight is 15,92 g. Protesilaos is a character from Iliad.

Thanks for all your comments!
