Severe Die Deterioration is pretty common on Nickels, since they push the dies to their limits.

@NC, looks to me like the die was pretty much at end state and had deteriorated enough that the nickels it was striking showed this doubling and other extra details. I don't think that there is a premium for this coin, but it is interesting to look at.

It's a mess, like so many of the mint's junk minor coins over the last 30 years.

I just checked on PCGS and they have three non step varieties and the die state is better than these, but still in the LDS/VLDS. This coin was struck by a die in very late VLDS.

I think I just figured out how they determine 'full steps.'
