Although not directly related to this thread's directive, it is nonetheless applicable since anyone obviously would like to avoid areas that could potentially waste one's time/money.
When I first started out I sent in an unremarkable LHC coin to a TPG just to find out the grade. When I sat back and analyzed my mishap it came to my realization that shelling out $ 50 incl. freight/insurance was just plain stupid.
Now, as a rule, I never submit any coin unless it's a sure shot for at least hitting $ 125 in value. When taxes, insurance, buyer's fees, seller's fees, round trip freight and the most deleterious expense (depending upon your income bracket it is your 'TIME' to pre-grade, photograph & prepare it for shipping etc.) it just does not make sense to lower significantly that aforementioned figure.
One exception might be if you have a potentially valuable variety that you are on fence insofar as its existence.
