Hi, I was about to post this lot of 3 coins to ebay, and noticed in the photo on the 1846 coin, a strange 3* on it - see photo.  Is this something that happened after minting? I couldn't find anything online about it, so I suspect maybe so. My uncle had this coin with others, and didn't note anything special about it. Thanks for any comments. -Jim |

Looks to be a Counterstamp (meaning someone stamped that into the coin at some point of its life) though not an expert, always welcome to CCF
I've been collecting for a couple years... Favorite Coin's are Standing Liberty quarters, Working on my type set | Coffee, Corvettes, Coins & the CCF what could be better? Edited by Jakes Coins

@jr451, first welcome to CCF. Second, with a so-called "maveric" counterstamp like this, it is very hard to get an attribution. You might be interested in this CCF thread, with tons of counterstamps: http://goccf.com/t/126486"If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

to the CCF, Jim. Yep, this is PMD, a maverick counterstamp that I've not before encountered, and I've seen tens of thousands of them, given that they're one of my major collecting interests. This "3*" c/s appears tinier than most. It may have served as a jeweler's or other fine craftsman's mark. One key to identifying marks like this is to locate a known or highly attributable c/s that bears a matching mark. It's a rare occurrence, but it has been done! Barring the extremely slim chance of this c/s being attributed, this maverick c/s renders the coin damaged, having minimal value as such. On the flip-side, attributed c/s's can greatly enhance the value of their host coins. |
