Does Coin Grading Consider The Age Of The Coin?

Mrdrae Valued Member United States 63 Posts	Posted 04/17/2021 12:56 pm Does the age of a coin determine how it is graded? Let's say I have a 1921 wheat and a 1995 LMC. Both have a grade of MS65. Would the 1921 penny have more scratches and damage than the 1995 LMC and still be graded at MS65? Report this Post to the Staff

jonnin Valued Member United States 128 Posts	Posted 04/18/2021 01:08 am for a penny, not so much. but a silver quarter scuffs easier (much softer) being bagged and dragged at the mint more than alloy, so you may see some grader tolerance for dings on the silver for the same quality in clad, but due to the opinion factor, its hard to put a finger on some of these kinds of things. First and most important is surface preservation (the amount and severity of blemishes on a coin and their locations on the coin) This single factor makes up the bulk of the grade. The second factor is the strength of the strike (weak to Strong), the third factor is luster and the fourth is overall eye appeal. Age has nothing to do with it. Report this Post to the Staff
