1990 LMC "Shadow" Letters

First off, I would like to thank everyone who has replied to my previous posts. I'm still new at this and I've learned a lot from the feedback and look forward to expanding my knowledge of this subject.

I came across this coin while going through my change from the day and it stood out from the rest. I am sure it's nothing special, but I am curious as to what causes this appearance. On the letters of UNITED STATES it looks almost like they are casting a shadow above them. It's not due to lighting as it appears the same when lit from any angle. Is anyone familiar with this effect and what causes it?

That is split copper plating. When the zinc hits the air it starts to turn dark gray.

I agree. You should be able to see it around the date as well.
