G'day, it's a stirling silver shilling, one-twentieth of a pound.
Yours is a "Jubilee Head", introduced in 1887 to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession.

Thanks for that. I'm in awe of the ability of members of this forum. Just got a handle (albeit a slippery one)on Aus coins and thought I'd open a box of UK issues. Wish I hadn't .......but I can't stop!

Peter I know this isn't the forum but as you've seen them recently and are clearly experienced.......are these scans ok for general use here? Should they be bigger/smaller ? is the res ok?

Those pics are fine enough. If we need more detail or magnification for a particular variety, we'll let you know.
