It can only be a "D" mint mark, the San Francisco mint was not producing coins in 1957.

In addition to the circulation flattening and light damage, the post on the die may have been mostly broken so that the letter D was mostly filled in with the as-struck condition. Regardless of the cause, it doesn't add to the numismatic premium for this coin.
