The biggest advantage to electronic shutters for macro is elimination of "shutter shake". When the shutter opens it causes a little bit of vibration that causes blurring of the image. Some cameras have full electronic shutters, while others are electronic at the beginning, but mechanical at the end.

DSLRs also have the problem of "mirror slap", which is actually a bit worse than shutter shake. Shooting a DSLR with both mirror slap and shutter shake can really mess up fine details in macro.

I did end up going with a Nikon D90 and a Nikkor 105mm AF lens. I have it tethered to my laptop via the Entangle app on Linux Mint. There is definitely a learning curve to the software and the lens, but I was able to take a few test photos.
