This I think is some kind of lamination error? I've not seen one quite as large as this, but that is what my guess was. You may start as many threads as you wish if you have multiple coins to show. Yep - that 1943-P is well worn and simply damaged. Its value is in the 35% silver content. My impression of the 1944-S is that is damage. Selective grinding perhaps? I look forward to other views. I moved your thread to the US Modern V/E forum.
