weight is 3.14 g. That's not off much, but the planchet is visibly thicker than normal and the strike is awesome.   |

Can you give us two or three pics of the edge of the coin? It may have been previously encased, giving the rims a thicker/higher look to it.

Weight appears to fall within the accepted tolerance for copper Lincoln cents...

Could be, I guess. However it would need to be encased then un-encased and returned to circulation sometime in 1972. That's when I put it into a whitman 2x2 envelope. It just happens to be in one I dated.  I would also think encasing would lead to more severe damage on the rim, especially if it led to significant thickening. I have never removed one from encasement so I wouldn't know. Whatever it is, I like the "porthole" effect of that thick rim. I'm sure I have more 72-d's around here somewhere to compare with. If I come across another one as I am going through stuff I will post it. Thanks! |
