1858 Flying Eagle XF 40 Appears To Be 1858/7

Jimbo48 Valued Member United States 263 Posts	Posted 07/18/2026 3:58 pm I recently purchased an XF40 1858 LL Flying Eagle. When I received it, I noticed a broken wingtip and also a die chip above the first 8 midway between the 8 and eagle's breast. There is also a trace of the 7 above the last 8. On Rick Snow's website he has an 1858 graded XF40 that is also not designated 1858/7. He even comments in the description that he is puzzled that they didn't catch it. It appears that the grading companies don't automatically designate if a variety exists. Report this Post to the Staff

The submitter of the coin needs to tell the TPG which variety they think it is and pay an additional 'variety attribution' fee. Otherwise it will not get annotated on the label. Jimbo48 Valued Member United States 263 Posts	Posted Today 3H 17M ago This Overdate is overlooked a lot because in later die stages it is faint and difficult to notice. There are three basic die states for this overdate according to Rick Snow. The images below are from his book and display the Stage A and B die states. According to Rick, as the dies were used and polished, the overdate became less noticeable. The example in this posting is a late die Stage B. The broken wingtip and die marker above the first 8 is still well defined, but the tip of the 7 above the last 8 is faint. If it were not at all present it would be designated die Stage C or Weak overdate. I hope this helps explain what we are dealing with in this coin. Report this Post to the Staff
