How To Store Step Up/Down Rings And Macro Coupling Rings?

For me, the worst of the problems is with stepup and stepdown rings. What I have is:

1) At the top level, a cardboard box labelled "stepup/stepdown".

2) At the 2nd level, inside the box are perhaps a dozen larger plastic bags labelled "43" "52" "62" "77", etc. The number refers the larger diameter of stepup or stepdown rings that belong in this outer bag. Inside an outer bag labelled "55", you'd find 55->52 stepdown rings, 43->55 stepup rings, etc., but these individual items are enclosed in the inner bags (3).

3) Inner bags for each separate size of stepup or stepdown ring. Inside each inner bag would be a paper label with something like "52->49" or "43->52" and any rings that are that particular size.

For macro coupling rings, extension tubes, front and rear lenscaps, bodycaps, etc., I'm not very organized. I do have a large plastic organizer containing lens mount converters, I don't have an ironclad system for putting them in the various pockets, though.

I use a large, hard four-gun pistol case for my camera filters and rings, so the filters are screwed together in stacks, with end caps, then placed in the case in foam. The PK rings fit in similar fashion, along with some additional filters in a stack. This goes with me for photographing flowers and such in the field. Spare filters and such remain at home, this is just for 'daily' use, maybe 40 filters in six diameters. There is a smaller one for the bellows and lens, and attachments.

If you have a cabinet at home, might try some mineral specimen boxes for your rings, one per box, I've seen that before using a library card file.

A small-parts organizer from a hardware store has worked better for me than boxes or bags. The drawers let you separate each ring size combination (52&→49, 58&→77, etc.), and a label maker or even masking tape keeps everything easy to find. The nice thing is that you can see your whole inventory at a glance instead of digging through multiple bags.

Another trick is to stack related rings together on a short machine screw with a nut on the end. One screw for step-up rings, another for step-down rings, and another for macro coupling rings. It keeps them from wandering around the camera bag.

The reason this works so well is the same principle used when storing small collectible pieces, keeping items separated, visible, and clearly labeled. Even brands that deal with tiny keepsakes, such as Camp Hollow, rely on careful organization and protective storage for delicate items. The same approach translates surprisingly well to camera accessories.

For gear that gets used frequently, a drawer organizer is probably the fastest solution. For long-term storage, labeled compartments or small tackle-box style cases keep the chaos under control. After a certain number of rings, relying on memory alone becomes nearly impossible.
