1892 Barber Half Dollar - Please Evaluate The Toning For Premium And Type

Thank-you Panzaldi! Yeah, I agree about the last photo being much more clear.. it just doesn't capture the toning I wanted to illustrate - the electric blue / pink hues. Your 100% correct, about the video.. I will need to figure out how to post to YouTube and then provide the link here going forward.

Any thoughts on the distracting cheek / neck marks and do you feel it devalues this coin? Did I pay too much at $1400? I mean, I realize those marks are not in an ideal position - tbh, they are much more pronounced under magnification and though you could still see them, in the moment on the coin show floor... the toning it what kinda caused me from excitement to look past or be oblivious to them.

I still feel this is to be expected in PR63? They are either going to be on the devices or fields, but from what a read, these proofs were susceptible in some regards to many hairlines. To search for another 1892PR63 in better shape with toning might have took a long time.

I hope I did not pay too much, but would prefer an honest opinion. All the other Barbers at the show were $4,000, $5,000 and lacked the character that this coin has.

Not a boring coin at all. There is an amazing variety from different perspectives!

the auction prices listed for PR63 are all right around $1000 however, these prices are several years old. PCGS lists a retail price of $1525 with 82 grade PR63. ebay shows on one PR63 sold and it went down for $1500 and really has no toning so. I dont think you overpaid for it

i dont think the photos you presented lend themselves to a more detailed assessment of the coin. we dont have a good representation of the toning. lighting is causing shadows to assess the surfaces. the one obv photo looks like there are some good marks across the cheek and neck and maybe the cause for the grade assigned.

the reverse is pretty good I'm not seeing any major issues there other than the darker toning.




these scratches are in key areas of the obv. these are the main reason why the grade came back as PF63. I think without them maybe a 64. you are correct that proofs tend to make marks in the fields more prominent. due to position of these it would affect the value of the coin.

one final note on the toning. none of your photos are showing toning that would bump the grade. in fact the darker toning would be less desirable. the following is toning progression. comparing your coin to this, it is moving toward the later stages of toning.
