I have explained to most tellers at the banks that I visit regularly that I acquire dimes and half dollars looking for silver coins. Most of them don't know that dimes, quarters, and half dollars used to contain 90% silver -- or that the silver in those coins now is worth ~40X their face value. My experience is that they typically support my hobby and are happy when I find "junk" silver. I am aware of only one teller who "competes" with me by purchasing silver coins cashed by a customer. It helps that I reward tellers when I acquire silver coins from a collection dump by giving them a modest gift card, or purchasing pizza lunch for their team. I essentially bear the cost of a self-imposed 10% "tax" rewarding them this way. It pays dividends when bank managers order BWRs for me, or tellers set aside coins that they think contain silver. |

I travelled to Cape Cod earlier this week. On Friday I stopped at several banks to see if I could find any silver half dollars. Four of them turned up. One teller told me that he had only two coins -- but both of them contained 40% silver. I wish the same customer cashed more coins!  |

This morning a teller called me from a small bank in the adjacent town. I've rarely had luck purchasing half dollars at that branch. She looked up my name and telephone number to alert me that a customer recently cashed $180 in Eisenhower dollars and $95 in half dollars. She explained that she had been purchasing the coins for the past 12 years for her son (who likes "big coins"). But he recently decided to cash his collection. I immediately drove to the bank because I anticipated that some of the half dollars contained silver -- and I hoped that a few "Eisenhower" coins might be Morgan or Peace dollars. None of the dollar coins contained silver. But the half dollar cache contained four 1964 Kennedy half dollars and six 40% silver coins. This result suggests that during the past decade or so, about 2% of the half dollars cashed at that branch contained 90% silver and about 3% of them contained 40% silver.  |
