I just noticed this listing on GC; a 1970-S quarter overstruck on a 1898 gold half eagle! PCGS has graded it PF66, and bidding is already up to $22k.

While a fascinating error, I can't imagine paying crazy money for one that was almost certainly intentionally made. I only say "almost" because I suppose there is some infinitesimally-small chance that a 72-year-old gold coin accidentally made it into a bin of quarter planchets...

Should be a special TPG category for undeniable inside jobs, aka employee-assisted errors.

29 days left for bidding, could this go above 6 figures?
I'll guess hammer price to be 65K.

Agreed. Since the different grading companies use various qualifiers for artificial/questionable toning or color, I don't see why there couldn't be some qualifier for errors that are most likely intentionally manufactured.

What, really, is the difference between that mint sport and this one?

The Secret Service should be seizing this thing. Maybe they won't, but they should.

Probably intentionally made. Still cool though.

100% inside job. I agree that there should be some sort of qualifier that TPG put on such manufactured errors.
