I have a couple of 1861-O half dollars and want to see if anyone can identify which of the 15 varieties they could be.

I apologize for the bad pictures as my camera years ago used to take great pictures but since I changed to overhead lighting in the room I can't take a good picture to save my life.

I think I know which one but what I don't understand is why NGC would not AT LEAST put the date on the slab.

I guess if they weren't going to put the date on it they weren't going to do a variety attribution that you usually see on 1861-O SS Republic slabs.

It might be the speared bud variety. Could you get a close up of the olive branch and leaves on the reverse?

It is either W-14 or W-15 because it does have the speared olive bud. If you can see if there is a vertical die crack on the left side of the "6" of the date then it would be W-14, if not then it is W-15.

This was a mass slabbing - one label for the whole shipload.

Such a dramatic difference in the obverse & reverse. I'm guessing the obverse was up and exposed to the environmental elements more. (Or down and exposed to the sediment?)
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
We need to consume them regularly to thrive and grow.
