FVRIVS RVFVS Pillar of the Community United States 3465 Posts	Posted 08/23/2026 7:26 pm Never had much confidence in my Ptolemaic attributions Æ Ptolemy IV Obv Zeus Ammon right Rv ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ Eagle wings spread standing left on Thunderbolt 41.84 grams 38mm Low relief style portrait I have several Ptolemy bronzes But this one is quite different Thinking it came out of some other mint than Alexandria ? The possibility that it is a "contemporary imitation" was always front center in my addled brain . But searching this AM through the Ptolemy AE Project I spied this curious piece Svoronos 1140 The diameter is spot on at 38mm While the weight is a tad light at 3.22 grams But the control is given as PΠΥE 'retrograde' ! Yet the illustration shows not ? Same low relief Same lack of a mint symbol Same diameter Only thing amiss is the weight being 3.22 grams light Well 3 out of 4 eh ? Report this Post to the Staff

Plainly we have what NGC loves to describe as a "flan flaw" This could easily account for a missing 3.22 grams At this point I think I'll score it perfect 4 out of 4 Or 5 for 5 counting the retrograde control .
