I have a couple of questions about the silver medal that accompanies the Best of the Mint Mercury dime (picture below). 1 . The figure on the obverse is holding the sword in the right hand, but I can't figure out what is in the left hand? Can anyone help me here? The booklets that accompany the coins may have more info than is on the website pages, so if anyone can check it out, I'd appreciate it. 2. Are there other coins designs that have this sort of "wrap-around" artwork, where an element on the obverse is continued on the reverse? It's new to me. Thanks for any help!  |

The handle on the inside / backside of a shield.
The diameter of the coin is the shield.

When I first saw it, I thought it looked like she couldn't get a seat on the Subway and had to stand.  |

A shame that almost nobody will ever witness this as it requires 2 medals.

Thanks for the clarification on the idea of the shield, as what she's holding in her left hand. While I can understand the idea, I have a hard time seeing it when I look at the medal. If the reverse were an actual shield, it would probably be clearer to me. &  I'll just think of this as an interesting experiment in art, as applied to medals. |
